Dual processor technology, up to 64 MB cache and SATA 3 Gb/s or 6
Gb/s interface takes everything we know about 7200 RPM performance
and turns it on its ear.
High Performance Electronics Architecture.
Dual processor - Twice the processing power to maximize performance.
Colossal cache - Bigger, faster cache of up to 64 MB means faster performance.
Interface - WD Caviar Black hard drives are offered with a SATA 6 Gb/s or a SATA 3 Gb/s interface.
High performance, high capacity, best-in-class reliability, and
cutting edge technology make up WD Caviar Black, the ideal drive for
those who demand only the best.
Rock Solid Mechanical Architecture.
Dual actuator technology - A head positioning system with two
actuators that improves positional accuracy over the data track(s).
The primary actuator provides coarse displacement using conventional
electromagnetic actuator principles. The secondary actuator uses
piezoelectric motion to fine tune the head positioning to a higher
degree of accuracy. (1.5 TB and 2 TB only)
StableTrac - The motor shaft is secured at both ends to reduce
system-induced vibration and stabilize platters for accurate tracking,
during read and write operations. (1.5 TB and 2 TB only)
NoTouch ramp load technology - The recording head never touches
the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head
and media as well as better drive protection in transit.
This 7200 RPM speedster is at the top of its class when it comes to performance and reliability benchmarks.
WD Caviar Black SATA drives are available in capacities up to 4TB.
We perform tests on hundreds of systems and a multitude of
platforms in our FIT Lab and Mobile Compatibility Lab to give our
customers confidence that our drives will work in their systems.
WD Black hard drives are tested and recommended for use in PCs, high-performance workstations and notebook computers.
Desktop drives are not recommended for use in RAID environments,
please consider using WD Red hard drives for home and small office 1-5
bay NAS systems and WD Enterprise hard drives for rackmount and >5
bay NAS systems.
SATA 6Gb/s Drives
WD is leading the way with a full lineup of SATA 6 Gb/s drives.
Over the years the industry has increased bus bandwidth from PATA
through SATA 1.5 Gb/s and SATA 3 Gb/s to keep up with the demand for
higher transfer rates. The next evolution of bus bandwidth has now
been achieved with the introduction of SATA 6 Gb/s, (SATA 3.0). We've
added a SATA 6 Gb/s interface to our award-winning WD Caviar Blue and
WD Caviar Black desktop hard drives in capacities from 250 GB to 2 TB.
This transition to a SATA 6 Gb/s interface aligns with the
introduction of SATA 6 Gb/s-supporting chip sets and motherboards
coming to the market.
Why should I buy a SATA 6 Gb/s hard drive from WD?
Buying a SATA 6 Gb/s drive now is a great way to make sure your
hard drive will be compatible with next generation motherboards and
And when you buy from WD, the world's leading hard drive supplier
by volume, you gain comfort in knowing that the drive has been
extensively tested for reliability and compatibility and will be
supported by world-class technical support.
Will SATA 6 Gb/s drives work with older systems?
Yes, the SATA 6 Gb/s interface uses the same connector as SATA 3
Gb/s and is compatible with Microsoft Windows 7/Vista/XP/2000 and Mac
